Tips on making my hair look nicer?

Okay well I am great at mixing things to find something that works for almost everything, but my hair is a completely different story. I have thick hair and I am currently using Aveda shampoo and straightening stuff, my hair is soft and doesn't look greasy or anything, but I have no clue how to get rid of those hairs that frizz up randomly at the top of my head! I also live in a dry cold climate and dont know how to keep my hair very straight! So if you had these ideas or know how to stop them, can you tell me how? Help please!?
